If you coach people and your following has any size to it, your DMs look the same every single day. Someone asks how to get unstuck on the exact thing you've already answered 200 times. Someone else wants "just five minutes" of your time for free. A few people ask genuinely good questions that deserve a real answer, but they're buried under the repeat questions you could type from memory.
You've probably looked at ManyChat's AI auto-replies or Meta's AI Studio and wondered if either one just makes the flood manageable. Or you've started wondering if there's a smarter move: instead of automating free answers forever, build something people actually pay to keep access to.
Both are reasonable instincts. The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and only one of them turns the repeat-question problem into revenue instead of just making it quieter.
What does ManyChat AI Replies actually do, and what does it cost?
ManyChat AI Replies is an Instagram-specific feature, currently in beta, that answers DMs from a knowledge library you build - up to 250,000 characters of context, per help.manychat.com (checked 2026-10-31). Alongside it sit AI Comments and AI Goals, which can nudge a conversation toward sending a link, capturing an email, or handing the person off to you. A separate mechanism called AI Steps works inside ManyChat's flow builder and extends to Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Telegram.
On pricing: ManyChat's Free plan is $0 for up to 25 Active Contacts a month with 4 live automations. Pro runs $39/month month-to-month or $29/month billed annually for 2,500 Active Contacts, and as of a March 2, 2026 pricing change, AI Replies is now bundled into Pro rather than sold as a separate add-on (older ManyChat pages still describe it as a $29 add-on, but the current pricing page confirms it's included). Business starts at $69/month billed annually for 7,500 contacts. Go over your contact limit and you're billed $0.05 per contact monthly, or $0.038 annually - all per manychat.com's pricing explainer, checked 2026-10-31.
One structural limit worth knowing before you build around it: Instagram's own messaging rules generally confine automated replies to a 24-hour window after someone's last message. A human can keep a conversation going manually for up to 7 days, but automated promotional follow-ups outside that 24-hour window aren't free to send, per developers.facebook.com and help.manychat.com (checked 2026-10-31). If your plan depends on the AI re-engaging someone three days later, this is the wall you'll hit.
As for Meta AI Studio - the free tool Meta launched in July 2024 for creators to build an AI extension of themselves for DMs and Story replies - it's effectively closed. As of August 10, 2026, Meta stopped allowing the creation of new AI Studio characters or edits to existing ones, per about.fb.com (checked 2026-10-31). Existing ones still run, but it is not something you can build on today.
Where DM automation maxes out, and what a paid AI coach is actually built for
Here's the part worth being honest about: ManyChat AI Replies and the now-shuttered Meta AI Studio were never built to be a coaching product. They're built to keep response rates up and cut support load on a messaging channel. Neither one has a native way to charge a recurring subscription for access. Neither one remembers a person's situation six months later, because that's not the job they're doing. That's the same ceiling we've seen generic AI chatbot builders hit once a creator tries to turn one into an actual coaching product.
A dedicated paid AI coaching platform is solving a different problem entirely: turning your methodology into something people subscribe to and keep paying for, month after month, because it actually remembers them and coaches them like you would.
ManyChat AI Replies | Meta AI Studio | Paid AI coaching platform (Coachvox / Delphi / platforms like BuddyPro) | |
Cost | $0-$69+/month, plus overage fees | Free, but closed to new builds since Aug 10, 2026 | Coachvox $83/mo annual; Delphi $79-$299/mo + custom; others built as a $1-2K/year subscriber product |
Channel | Instagram DMs only (AI Replies); flows extend to other apps | Instagram DMs/Stories (existing characters only) | Website embed, or Telegram/white-label app/API depending on platform |
Recurring billing from your audience | No native subscription mechanism | No native subscription mechanism | Built in - Stripe-based subscriptions, trials, coupons |
Long-term memory | No | No | Platform-dependent; on some, unlimited long-term memory across months or years |
Methodology depth | Answers from a knowledge library | Answers from your Story/DM history | Trained on full books, courses, frameworks, video/audio |
Coachvox charges $83/month on an annual plan with a 14-day trial, unlimited chats, and a website-embeddable chat page, per coachvox.ai and support.coachvox.ai (checked 2026-10-31). If you run subscriptions through Coachvox's own built-in payment system rather than your own Stripe setup, Coachvox takes 10% of that subscription revenue on top of Stripe's roughly 2.9% processing fee. Coachvox itself reports (vendor-stated, not independently verified) that its customers typically charge $10-150/month for access.
Delphi's pricing runs Free at $0, Builder at $79/month, Scaler at $299/month, and a custom-priced Immortal tier, per delphi.ai/pricing (checked 2026-10-31). Delphi's public pages aren't fully clear about which tier actually includes full creator monetization and membership capability - it appears that may be reserved for the custom Immortal tier, so treat that as unconfirmed rather than assume it's available at the lower price points.
Platforms built specifically around turning an expert's own know-how into a subscription product take a different pricing shape entirely: instead of you paying a monthly platform fee, you upload your existing books, courses, or video content, the AI maps it into a coaching product within days, and you sell annual access to your own audience - typically $1-2K per year - keeping 100% of the profit after AI usage costs, which run roughly $15-30 per subscriber per month, about 20% of the subscription price. That's a 75-85% margin on a product you built once. We've gone deeper on that economics comparison, including what it costs to build this yourself versus buy into an existing platform, elsewhere.
The deeper difference isn't the pricing model though - it's what the product remembers and how it behaves. A tool built on an AI companion core, rather than a chatbot framework, carries a real mentoring relationship forward: it recalls what a subscriber told it months ago, has a personality rather than a script, and can proactively check in and hold someone accountable instead of waiting to be messaged. On the strongest-performing twins built this way, 60% of subscribers show up daily and 80% show up weekly - a pattern you don't get from a reply bot answering from a knowledge base.
How do you route constant DM-askers toward a paid AI coach instead of answering forever?
This is the honest part of the plan: BuddyPro has no native Instagram DM integration. It lives in Telegram, in a white-label native mobile app, or via API - not embedded inside Instagram's chat window the way ManyChat's AI Replies is. So the move isn't "swap one Instagram tool for another." It's a two-layer setup.
Keep (or set up) ManyChat's AI Replies or a simple saved-reply flow for the genuinely repetitive, low-stakes questions - the ones that don't need real coaching depth, just a fast answer or a resource link. That's what DM automation is actually good at, and it's fine to let it keep doing that job.
For the people who ask real, recurring, "I need actual help with my situation" questions - the ones who DM you constantly because they want ongoing access, not a one-off answer - route them out of the DM with a link. That link points to your own paid AI coach: a product built on your methodology, delivered through Telegram, a branded app, or wherever you've deployed it, that they subscribe to once and then message any time, with the AI remembering their situation across every future conversation.
The most common way experts introduce this isn't a cold DM pitch - it's a webinar or live session to the existing audience where the paid AI coach is unveiled as the answer to "I can't be in everyone's DMs all day." That single moment usually does more to convert repeat-askers into subscribers than any automated flow ever will. We've written before about turning a big social media following into paying AI coaching subscribers if DM volume is coming from Instagram growth specifically. For a business coaching audience, the strongest-performing instance of this launch converts 36% of trial users into paying subscribers - a figure specific to that one niche, not a platform-wide average, but a useful signal of what's possible when the offer lands with an audience that's already been asking for help.
The takeaway
ManyChat AI Replies and Meta AI Studio were built to manage DM volume cheaply, not to build a coaching business - and as of August 10, 2026, Meta AI Studio isn't even buildable for new creators anymore. If your repeat DM questions are a volume problem, those tools quiet the noise. If they're a business opportunity you keep giving away for free, they don't capture any of it.
The coaches who move first on a paid AI coach in their niche are the ones who own that space before someone else in their category does. Building that layer is a one-time effort - upload what you already know, let it train, launch it to your audience - after which it runs without you answering the same question for the thousandth time. BuddyPro, named earlier as one of the platforms built for exactly this, has more detail on that build at buddypro.ai.
